The Incredible Journey of Dr. Wendy A. Okolo, NASA’s Trailblazing Aerospace Engineer

In a world where the skies are no longer the limit, Dr. Wendy A. Okolo is leading the way—soaring higher, pushing boundaries, and redefining what’s possible in aerospace engineering. From working on military aircraft to shaping the future of flight at NASA, her story is one of brilliance, resilience, and groundbreaking impact.

Who is Dr. Wendy A. Okolo?

Dr. Okolo is an aerospace engineering researcher at the NASA Ames Research Center in Silicon Valley. There, she works in the Intelligent Systems Division, leading teams and conducting advanced research in aerospace vehicle controls and systems health monitoring—helping make flight safer, smarter, and more efficient.

Fueling Innovation from the Ground Up

Before her NASA tenure, she contributed to fuel-saving aircraft formation flight research at the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory, where she implemented unconventional control mechanisms that led to actual fuel savings in test flights.

At Lockheed Martin’s Advanced Development Programs (Skunkworks), she optimized performance controls for the F-35C Joint Strike Fighter, working wad   emic Path

Dr. Okolo began her aerospace journey as an undergraduate intern at Lockheed Martin, working on NASA’s Orion spacecraft—the vehicle designed to carry astronauts beyond low Earth orbit. That early spark ignited a powerful desire to advance research in flight dynamics and controls.

At just 26 years old, she became the first Black woman to earn a Ph.D. in aerospace engineering from the University of Texas at Arlington. Her graduate work was recognized and funded by some of the most prestigious fellowships, including:

NDSEG Fellowship from the U.S. Department of Defense

Amelia Earhart Fellowship from Zonta International

Support from the Texas Space Grant Consortium

Honors that Inspire a Generation

Dr. Okolo’s excellence has earned her numerous accolades:

NASA Exceptional Technology Achievement Medal (2021)

NASA Ames Researcher/Scientist of the Year (2020)

First Woman Recipient of the NASA Ames Early Career Researcher Award (2019)

Black Engineer of the Year – Most Promising Engineer in U.S. Government (2019)

Women in Aerospace Award for Inspiration & Impact (2019)

Championing Diversity in STEM

Dr. Okolo’s mission extends beyond her technical expertise. As the Special Emphasis Programs Manager for Women at NASA Ames, she implemented policies to empower women in the workplace—creating nursing rooms for new mothers and removing gender bias from job descriptions to boost inclusivity.

Her advocacy has earned her the NASA Ames Honor Award for Diversity and Equal Opportunity. In 2021, she was named one of the Most Influential People of African Descent (MIPAD) in support of the United Nations International Decade for People of African Descent.

A Global Voice for Change

A highly sought-after speaker, Dr. Okolo has delivered keynote addresses and served on international panels, using her voice to inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers. Her message is clear: STEM is for everyone—and so are the stars.

“There are many ways to the stars… and it inspires you to find your own way.”

— Dr. Wendy Okolo

Dr. Okolo’s journey isn’t just about aerospace—it’s about audacity, purpose, and lifting others as you rise. Whether in the lab, the skies, or the halls of NASA, she’s proving that the universe has room for every dreamer bold enough to reach for it.

Let this story remind us: There is space for everyone in space.
