From Abatete to Academic Eminence

Born in Abatete, Idemili North, Anambra State, Egbu’s parents—his mother a nurse and his father a civil servant—instilled in him a belief that “education was number one… nothing else matters.” This foundational value set him on a path to stellar academic achievement.

He pursued Quantity Surveying at Leeds Metropolitan University (now Leeds Beckett University), graduating with First-Class Honours. After that, he earned a Doctorate in Construction Project Management from the University of Salford—demonstrating not just academic prowess, but fierce determination.

A Scholarly Journey Spanning Institutions

Over 30 years in higher education, Professor Egbu has held roles of increasing influence across multiple UK universities:

  • Dean of the School of Built Environment and Architecture, London South Bank University
  • Head of the School of Built Environment, University of Salford
  • Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Education & Experience), University of East London
  • Academic roles at UCL, Glasgow Caledonian University, and Leeds Beckett University

In November 2020, he reached a historic milestone when he was appointed Vice-Chancellor of Leeds Trinity University, breaking barriers as one of the UK’s first Black university leaders.

A Leader in Research, Inclusion, and Innovation

Professor Egbu’s work transcends titles. He is an accomplished scholar with:

  • 12+ authored books on sustainable development, construction management, and knowledge management
  • Over 350 peer-reviewed publications, and supervision of more than 25 PhD students

As President of the Chartered Institute of Building (2019–2020) and a Fellow of professional bodies including RIBA and CIOB, he plays a leading role in shaping the future of architecture and education.

In 2023, he was honored as an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects, recognizing his transformative contributions to architecture and the built environment.

Driving Change: Equity, Inclusion & Apprenticeships

As Vice-Chancellor, he has advanced not just academic excellence but social justice and inclusion:

  • Leeds Trinity earned the Bronze Race Equality Charter award under his leadership—an institutional commitment to dismantle systemic racism.
  • He launched an Office for Institutional Equity, alongside a diversity mentoring program for staff—paving leadership pathways for underrepresented groups.
  • Appointed to the Board of the University Vocational Awards Council (UVAC), he champions apprenticeships and career-led education models, bridging academia and industry for student success.

Vision in Action: Strategy and Student Empowerment

Navigating the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, Professor Egbu led Leeds Trinity through a fast response—introducing academic, financial, and mental health support for students, while launching a bold Strategic Plan (2021–2026) to guide the university toward inclusive growth and excellence Leeds Trinity University.

His Voice: On Race, Leadership, and Legacy

Professor Egbu is not afraid to speak truth to power. In conversations on racial equality, he highlights the need for universities to be anti-racist—not just acknowledging racism but actively dismantling it through measurable, collaborative change universitiesuk.ac.uk.
